A manual workflow for finding relevant Reddit conversations
Start with one customer problem and a small set of plausible communities. Search the language people use to describe that problem, read each promising thread, and keep discussions where you can contribute something specific. Discovery should produce a review queue.
Give the search a narrow job
“Find customers for my software” leaves too much open. A more useful brief is: “Find small service businesses asking how to reduce missed appointments.”
Write down the person, the problem and one important constraint before searching. For example: independent appointment-based businesses, missed bookings, and a need for SMS reminders.
Use this as a boundary. A popular discussion about enterprise contact centres may contain the same keywords without matching the business you serve.
Spend the first few minutes choosing communities
Search for communities related to the person’s work or problem. Read their descriptions, rules and several recent discussions. Look for the kind of questions members actually ask.
A community can be useful for learning even when promotional participation is unsuitable. Record that distinction so another teammate does not mistake a research source for an invitation to pitch.
Reddit lets you search inside a community from its own page. Check the search scope before interpreting the results.
Run a short search session
Try this twenty-minute routine as a starting point. Keep the task small enough that you have time to read the results.
For native Reddit search, fields can narrow the task. The query below searches a named community and a phrase in post titles. The community is an example to investigate, not an endorsement of promotional posting there.
Reddit documents field filters and quoted multiword searches in its search guide. Do not assume those operators behave identically inside third-party discovery tools.
- Five minutes: choose two plausible communities and inspect their rules.
- Five minutes: try three problem phrases, such as “missed appointments,” “booking reminders” and “booking software.”
- Seven minutes: read the strongest results and their comments.
- Three minutes: save a small review queue and note which queries produced irrelevant results.
subreddit:smallbusiness title:"booking software"Keep evidence, not just links
For each candidate, record the permalink, posting date, the question being asked, one exact supporting quotation and your proposed contribution.
Add a reason for skipping weak matches: already resolved, wrong location, missing required feature, promotional post, or no useful answer to add. Those reasons improve the next search.
Imagine an invented result: “Our salon has started taking deposits, but clients still forget appointments. What reminder setup works for you?” A useful note identifies reminders as the unresolved problem. It does not assume the salon wants a new payment platform or has approved a software budget.
Before replying, check whether another commenter has already supplied the answer you planned to give.
Stop when the results stop helping
If several results miss the same requirement, revise the phrase or community. Increasing message volume will not repair a poor search.
Reddit’s spam policy covers repeated or unsolicited mass engagement, including repetitive posting and large amounts of unsolicited messaging. Writing messages manually does not remove that concern.
Site2Signal supports resumable scans across communities, post searches and comments, with separate collection and AI-review limits. It is a bounded discovery aid. You review the source and choose whether to participate.
Common questions
How many communities should I start with?
Two or three is a manageable experiment. Expand when you understand why the first set does or does not fit.
Should I contact everyone who appears relevant?
No. Relevance is one input; context, community rules and whether you can help still matter.
What if a search returns nothing useful?
Change one variable at a time: the problem phrase, the community or the requirement. Keep the failed query as a note.
