How to recognise buying intent in Reddit posts
Look for a specific problem, a request for a solution, and requirements your offer actually meets. Timing and a stated budget strengthen the evidence. Treat missing information as unknown. A promising post deserves closer reading; its author has not necessarily decided to buy.
Start with the request someone actually made
A complaint about complicated software can mean several things. The writer might want troubleshooting advice, a simpler product, reassurance, or somewhere to vent. Those situations call for different responses.
Read the full post and its recent comments before assigning intent. An author may have clarified a requirement, chosen a solution, or explained that paid options are unsuitable. A title containing “recommendations” tells you where to look. It cannot establish the rest.
Keep one exact quotation beside your assessment. If you cannot point to the words supporting a claim, lower your confidence in it.
A practical ten-point worksheet
This is an editorial worksheet for human review, not a prediction of conversion or the formula behind Site2Signal’s AI scores.
Use zero when evidence is absent. One point can represent partial evidence; award the maximum only when the relevant statement is clear. Missing budget information means “not stated,” rather than “cannot afford it.”
Apply exclusions separately. An excellent functional match may still be unsuitable if you cannot serve the location or meet a required integration.
| Dimension | Points | Evidence to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Offer fit | 0–3 | The audience, problem and required capabilities match what you provide. |
| Active need | 0–3 | The author describes a problem and asks for a solution, recommendation or comparison. |
| Timing | 0–2 | A stated deadline or active evaluation gives the discussion a current purpose. |
| Budget | 0–2 | The author says paid options are acceptable or provides a usable budget range. |
A worked example, with an important disqualifier
Consider the invented post below. Suppose your product supports recurring tasks and guest access within that stated limit.
You could record fit 3, active need 3, timing 2 and budget 2. Useful evidence includes “need recurring tasks and guest access” and “switch before next month.”
Then check the comments. If the author adds that on-premises hosting is mandatory and your product is cloud-only, that disqualifier overrides the attractive score. Keep the mismatch visible.
Compare that with “Why is project management software so annoying?” It may be useful customer research, but it does not yet establish an active purchase decision.
Invented example: We’re a six-person design agency using spreadsheets to manage client work. We need recurring tasks and guest access, ideally under $50 a month. Has anyone found something simple? We want to switch before next month.
Choose a proportionate next step
As a working review order, examine scores of seven or above first. For scores between four and six, identify the single missing fact that would change your assessment. Lower scores may belong in research notes or be skipped. These bands organise attention; they are not measured probabilities.
Decide separately whether participation is appropriate. Reddit asks for authentic participation and compliance with community rules. A strong commercial match does not override those rules.
Site2Signal keeps fit, need, urgency and budget assessments alongside source evidence and caveats. Its scores remain estimates for review. Open the original discussion before acting.
Common questions
Does a competitor mention show buying intent?
Only with context. A comparison request may show evaluation; a tutorial, joke or satisfied recommendation may not.
Should high-upvote posts receive higher scores?
Popularity does not establish budget, urgency or fit. Assess the author’s request.
What if the post has been deleted?
Stop treating it as an outreach opportunity. Reddit’s informal Reddiquette guidance also discourages reposting deleted or removed material.
